Facebook remains top search term in 2010

In a demonstration of its popularity and, possibly, its potential as a marketing tool, the social networking site Facebook remained the most-searched term on the internet for the second consecutive year in 2010.

"Facebook" was the top search term in 2009 and 2010, and four different variations of the website's name appeared in the top ten this year, reported Experian Hitwise in an analysis of 1,000 search terms. "Facebook" and "facebook login" were the top two terms, while "Youtube" and "craigslist" came in third and fourth. When combined, common search terms for Facebook accounted for 3.49 percent of all searches in the U.S. in 2010, said the report.

Additionally, Facebook upset Google.com as the most-visited website in 2010, jumping up from a third-place finish the year before. The site accounted for 8.93 percent of all U.S. visits between January and November, said the report.

Experts have said Facebook's wide reach could present a valuable marketing tool for landlords looking to get in contact with tenants. The site provides applications and networking capabilities that can help property managers market their apartments, get in touch with prospective applicants and organize community events and promotions.

There are roughly 500 million active users on Facebook, with about 50 percent of them logging on to the website at least once a day.
